Rhetorical Analysis

The main underlying argument is the promotion of assimilation and multilingualism, rather than contempt for it. This goes hand in hand with my target audience being young First-generation Americans who have faced linguistic issues as well as those who would argue against the influx of languages in cultures in the U.S. The genre is a meme that can appeal to younger audiences who may find themselves in a relatable position. It also provides a visual aspect to my argument which could serve as an aid.

The purpose of my argument is that America is a melting pot of various languages and cultures that have become the foundation of this country. Although this is the case many immigrants and children of immigrants find it difficult to express their cultural identity and speak in the languages that are associated with them. Especially with those who oppose the idea of foreign languages taking the limelight from English occasionally.

For the rhetorical strategy I employed, I used humor to display the idiocy that some Americans display when the idea of new languages and assimilation is discussed. The use of humor is to bring a lighter tone to a serious issue. It can also possibly bring laughter to anyone whose been in a similar position with an ignorant person. With the rise of “Karen’s” creating uproar over topics on social media, the viewer may draw comparisons with this and find it funny as well. This is not a generalization of all White Americans, but from personal experience and testimonials of other first-generation Americans, this seems to be a recurring theme.

The rhetorical appeal being used in this meme is Pathos. Not only is this meme trying to draw out the humor in the situation presented but also anger and frustration. Children of immigrants often find it difficult to express their language and culture when there are people constantly putting them down for it. The humor is used to draw the viewer in while the frustration is what gets them contemplating their own past situations with the resistance of change and acceptance.

The meme may be simplistic, but the topic is complex and dense. It does a good job of introducing the argument minimally allowing the author to go into detail on why they believe languages and differences, should be valued rather than shunned. There is a sense of white superiority or nationalism in Americans because there is no language called “American”. He is ignorantly referring to English and assuming that everyone in the world speaks English since he does. People that can speak two languages are smarter and use more of their left-brain hemisphere to translate and speak languages, as research in psychology. It’s a useful skill to have and shouldn’t be looked down upon.
